What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a simple time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s.

By using a Pomodoro Timer and breaking down your work into small sessions, traditionally 25 minutes in length, you can improve your work and study habits so as to be more efficient and productive. The beauty of this technique is that it helps you to quickly get into the zone while also making sure that you take frequent breaks throughout your day and without draining your mental energy.

Besides offering background sounds, which let you set the right sound environment to work to, we also offer a Timer designed for working in sessions and with lots of customisable features. For example, you can choose that when the session is up the Timer simply fades out, or alternatively you can get notified by a sound or a web notification. Furthermore, you can choose to display the Timer time on the browser tab or even have the timer start each session and break automatically for you.

How does the “Work in Sessions” Feature work?

If you enable “Work in Sessions”, the Timer will guide you through sessions and breaks.
You can then customize the length of each session, the length of your short and long break as well as how many sessions you want to make in total.

If you activate “Auto-Start”, the Timer will automatically run from session to break and from break to session until you’ve completed all your sessions, without you having to manually activate each session/break. This will greatly help you achieve a state of flow and help you stay in the zone when working.

In the “Stats” section you will see how many sessions you’ve completed in a day so to help you analyze your workflow and see on which days you’ve been more productive and on which ones not so much.

Now it’s time to put the technique into action. As a starting point, we suggest setting 4 “Sessions” of 25 minutes each, “Short Break” of 5 minutes and a “Long Break” of 15 minutes. You can always change those values if you feel like you can concentrate for longer (or shorter) or if you want to have more or less sessions before a longer break.

Here’s how to work in pomodoros with the Noisli pomodoro timer:

  1. First off, head over to Noisli and start a Playlist or whatever sound combination that puts you into work mode. For a quick start, simply play our playlist “Productivity”.
  2. Start the Timer to start your first pomodoro of 25 minutes; Concentrate on your task until the sound stops.
  3. Take a 5 minutes break. If you are a Pro or Business user, and you’ve activated the option “Work in Sessions”, at the end of the 25 minutes session the Timer will automatically switch to a “Short Break” session.
  4. Once the 5 minutes break is over, start your next session of 25 minutes.
  5. Repeat until you complete 4 “Sessions”.
  6. After 4 “Sessions”, take a “Long Break” of 15-30 minutes.

Pro Tips:

#1: when starting a new work “Session”, simply click “Replay” to restart timer and sounds together.

#2: if you enable the “Time End Notification” option, you’ll be notified with a sound when the “Session” is up, making it easy and rewarding to complete your sessions.

#3: if you enable the “Break End Notification” option, you’ll be notified with a sound when the “Short Break” or “End Break” is up.

#4: if you enable the “Auto-start” option, the timer will help you by automatically starting sessions and breaks for you.

Using our Timer and sounds together is a powerful combination, as they both function as a mental cue to help you get as quickly as possible into the zone and help you stay there.


The beauty of this methodology is that it helps you to take frequent breaks, which allows both your mind and body to rest and recharge frequently so as to always work with high energy levels. Over time, this will be of great help in increasing your efficiency and ultimately make you more productive, while also helping you to avoid burnout.

As this method is highly flexible, it can be tweaked and adapted to many different workflows. Just give it a try, find your own rhythm and see yourself improve while moving forward.
